The Washington Post has been sold to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, for the somewhat common sum of $250 million. (Think salaries of pro athletes. But at least it’s a lot more than the recent $70 million price tag of the Boston Globe after it was bought in the ’90s for over $1 billion.) Much more important than the selling price is the fact Mr. Bezos will take the Washington Post private. There will be no angry and greedy shareholders screaming for more profit. In short, it’s possible the Amazon founder will find great purpose in preserving and enhancing the quality journalism of The Post. We can hope.
Postscript: After the initial publishing of the story above, columnist Kathleen Parker wrote about her own particular connection to The Post and to the sale…a column worth reading.
