150 years ago, during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln spoke at the Soldiers’ National Cemetary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It would be another year and a half before the war would be over, a war that would claim over 600,000 lives in a population of 31,000,000. That percentage today would translate into an unfathomable 6,000,000 dead. But somehow, in what must have seemed like absolute carnage and despair, Lincoln found our better angels. In so doing, he took the baton of the brilliant and wise founding fathers of the United States of Amerca and not only preserved but elevated the country and its principles. What Lincoln did created the country’s exceptionalism by embracing the exceptionalism of humanity..bottom up, not top down.
