For those, like yours truly, who love the inside baseball of politics, Eric Cator’s defeat was a stunner. In this endlessly analyzed and polled world of politics, it truly is amazing that just about everyone missed this. It’s also amazing that an entrenched power politician with millions of dollars in his war chest can’t figure out a way to garner a few thousand more votes. And this latter point is why Cantor’s defeat won’t stun.
In round figures Tea Party favorite David Brat beat Eric Cantor 36,000 to 29,000, a 7,000 vote margin. It is difficult to imagine why 3,500 voters in Virginia will seem like a resounding endorsement of the Tea Party.
